Al-Furqan · Makki · ayah 26 of 77
Al-Furqan 25:26
ٱلْمُلْكُ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْحَقُّ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۚ وَكَانَ يَوْمًا عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَسِيرًا
“True sovereignty, that Day, is for the Most Merciful. And it will be upon the disbelievers a difficult Day.”
Saheeh International
Essence
When every borrowed crown is handed back, true kingship is the Merciful's alone, and the Day is hard only for those who refused Him.
A reflection
Where are the kings of the earth?
Al-mulku yawmaʾidhin al-ḥaqqu li-l-Raḥmān: the kingship, on that Day, the true one, belongs to the Merciful. The sentence is built with care. Kingship comes first, then the Day, then the word true, and only at the end the One who holds it.
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim record the Prophet ﷺ describing that moment. Allah will grip the earth and fold the heaven in His right hand. Then He will say: I am the King. Where are the kings of the earth?
Nobody answers. That silence is the point.
Picture a man who hires a stretch limousine for his fortieth birthday. The hotel doorman opens the door for him. Strangers on the pavement look twice. For one evening he is treated like royalty, and he enjoys it more than he admits. At midnight the hire ends. He takes the night bus home in the same suit, and nobody looks at all.
Every human kingship is that evening. The title, the corner office, the followers, the deference of a room when you walk in. It is hired, and the hire has an end. The ego forgets this every day, and the ayah reminds it once and for all.
Someone might object that it sounds proud for God to announce His own kingship. But pride is claiming a greatness you do not have, or needing others to confirm it. Allah claims nothing He does not hold, and needs no one's applause. The Quran says plainly that people are the ones in need, and Allah is the Rich, the Praised (35:15).
The announcement is for us. A person who knows the hire will end walks more humbly through the evening. He tips the doorman. He does not shout at the waiter. He is not crushed at midnight, because he never mistook the car for himself.
