Ghafir 40:16
“The Day they come forth nothing concerning them will be concealed from Allāh. To whom belongs [all] sovereignty this Day? To Allāh, the One, the Prevailing.[1365]”

Essence
On the Day everyone stands in the open with nothing hidden, the question of who holds dominion has one answer: Allah, the One, the Prevailing.
A reflection
Where are the kings of the earth?
Li-mani al-mulku al-yawm? Whose is the dominion today?
The Prophet ﷺ described a moment on that Day. Allah takes hold of the earth and folds up the heavens. Then He says: I am the King. Where are the kings of the earth? Sahih al-Bukhari records it.
The commentaries record different views on how the question in this ayah is answered. One says it is asked when no one is left to reply, and Allah answers Himself: to Allah, the One, the Prevailing. Another, reported from Ibn Masʿūd, places it when all creation is gathered on a white plain like silver. No sin was ever committed on it. Then everyone answers. The believers say it with joy. The deniers say it in grief and submission.
Either way, the question needs no debate. It has only one possible answer.
Picture a palace museum. A throne sits behind a velvet rope. Once, men trembled before whoever sat on it. Petitions were whispered, sentences passed, wars declared from that chair. Now tourists queue to take selfies beside it. A child asks whose it was, and the guide has to check the plaque.
That is every earthly throne, given time. The ayah only removes the time.
Human pride constantly builds small kingdoms: a department, a household, a following, a reputation. We speak of 'my' people and 'my' decisions as if the grip were permanent. The root of mulk is exactly that grip: having a thing in your power.
On that Day every grip is opened. One answer remains, and every voice gives it. The only question for us is whether we will say it with joy.
