Al-Qamar 54:11

فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ

“Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down”

Saheeh International

Essence

One prayer from an overpowered man, and the sky's gates swung open: the heavens we forecast and photograph have doors that only He unlocks.

A reflection

The sky has gates, and we do not hold the keys

On a Thursday evening, a television weather presenter sweeps a confident hand across the map. A dry weekend for most, she says. Families book barbecues. A town plans its summer fair. On Saturday morning a storm nobody predicted parks itself over the valley, and by noon the high street is under water.

We have become very good at talking about the sky as if it were ours. We track it by satellite, forecast it by the hour, and photograph it every evening. Our phones tell us the chance of rain to the nearest ten per cent. Somewhere inside, the ego starts to believe that what we can measure, we manage.

The ayah opens with a different voice. Fa-fataḥnā: so We opened. Not the clouds broke. Not the weather turned. We opened the gates of the sky. A classical theologian notices that the opening comes immediately after Nuh's prayer, as a direct answer. The whole sky became a door, and the One who owns it turned the key.

Some early readers recite the verb with a doubled letter, for the many gates flung open together. A commentator notes the plural of gates here carries the sense of a great number.

Picture it honestly. Every flood barrier, every drainage plan, every forecast model is a human arrangement made inside a house whose doors we do not control. That should not frighten the believer into paralysis. It should cure us of arrogance. The ego that says "I have this under control" is speaking from inside a house with gates it cannot lock.

A sceptic may ask whether this is Allah displaying His power to be admired. Look at why the gates opened. A man had been mocked, choked and threatened for centuries. He said: I am overpowered. The display of power came as an answer to the powerless. Allah needs no audience. His might, here, is mercy to the one who had no might left.
