كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
“ʿAad denied the messengers”
Saheeh International
Essence
The mighty people of ʿĀd, heirs of the world the flood had cleared, denied every messenger by denying the one sent to them.
A reflection
Grandchildren of the ark
A family survived a famine three generations ago. The grandmother who lived through it never wasted a crust. She would wipe the pot with bread and eat the bread. Her great-grandchildren scrape full plates into the bin without a thought. Nobody in the house is wicked. They have simply forgotten what hunger was.
Read this ayah straight after the last one. The water has just closed over Nuh's people. The very next sentence introduces ʿĀd. The surah's order is telling.
Hud reminded his people of exactly this. 'Remember when He made you successors after the people of Nuh' (7:69). They lived in a world the flood had cleared. They were descended from those the laden ark had carried. Their whole existence was the after-life of a rescue.
And they denied al-mursalīn, the messengers, plural. Only Hud was sent to them. One modern commentary explains why the plural fits. The call of every messenger is one in its roots and its goal. To reject one is to reject them all.
Follow that through. In rejecting Hud, ʿĀd rejected Nuh too. They called a lie the very message their own forefathers had believed. The message that had kept their family line alive.
This is a pattern that repeats in households, not only in history. The first generation finds faith in a crisis. The second keeps its forms. The third keeps the comfort and drops the gratitude. The fourth asks what the fuss was about.
No one in that chain decides to deny anything. They simply forget the water. Ask yourself which rescue in your own family's past you have stopped remembering, and what it asks of you now.
