Ash-Shu'ara 26:17

أَنْ أَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

“[Commanded to say], "Send with us the Children of Israel."'"”

Saheeh International

Essence

Spelled out in a palace, the message of the Lord of the worlds begins with five words: let them go with us.

A reflection

The message, spelled out in one clause

The ayah begins with a small particle, an, and the grammarians stop on it. It works like a colon. The previous ayah said: we are the messenger of the Lord of the worlds. This one says what the message is: release the Children of Israel with us.

One commentary explains why. The word 'messenger' carries the sense of speech, so an simply unfolds it. In other words, in this telling, the first content of the message from the Lord of all the worlds is a release. Not a lecture on the heavens. Not a demand for tribute. A people held in labour must be let go.

The commentators describe what that labour was. The Children of Israel were held in Pharaoh's grip, oppressed and tormented. They were used as slaves and servants for his works and the hardest tasks of his realm. Some reports say this had lasted for centuries.

On the edge of a city far from here, a brick kiln runs day and night. The families who work it took a small advance years ago, for food or a wedding. Every month the owner deducts for tools, for the bunks, for the water. The debt never shrinks. Nobody is chained, and nobody can leave.

That is why the order of these two ayat matters. You cannot say 'Lord of the worlds' with sincerity and keep His servants in a kiln. The Lordship of Allah is not an idea that floats above the way people are treated. It walks into the workplace and asks who here is not free to go.

For the believer, the clause turns into a question. If the message I claim to follow begins with releasing people, what does my faith ask me to loosen this week? A worker's unpaid hours, a relative's withheld share, a debt I could forgive. The ayah does not let worship and justice live in separate rooms.
