Ash-Shu'ara 26:10

وَإِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱئْتِ ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

“And [mention] when your Lord called Moses, [saying], "Go to the wrongdoing people -”

Saheeh International

Essence

One man, alone on a mountain at night, is called by his Lord and sent back to the people he fled, named by their wrongdoing.

A reflection

Go: a one-word brief for the hardest meeting

A new head teacher arrives at a struggling school. Within a week one father has sent eleven emails, each angrier than the last. Her deputy drafts a careful reply. She reads it, puts on her coat and walks to his house. Twenty minutes on his doorstep do what eleven emails could not.

Iʾti: go, come to them. The command is one word. It is not 'write to them' or 'warn them from afar'. It is arrival in person. The root's own picture is water coming along its channel, arriving where it was always headed.

Now look where Musa is told to arrive. Not at a friendly tribe. Not even at the enslaved people who need him most. At al-qawm al-ẓālimīn, the wrongdoing people, at the centre of their power. Musa had fled that land with a charge hanging over him (26:14). The brief sends him back through the very door he escaped from.

His next words show it was not easy (26:12-13). He fears being called a liar. His chest tightens. His tongue does not flow. The command does not deny any of that. It still says: go.

There is a strategy in the order, too. Musa is sent first to those doing the wrong, not to rally those suffering it. The demand to release the Children of Israel comes later, face to face (26:17). A wrong is addressed at its source, openly.

Anyone who leads knows the temptation to manage the hardest person from a distance. A manager, a parent, an imam: we send the email and avoid the room. The command to Musa quietly rebukes that habit. Some things can only be said standing at the door.
