Ash-Shu'ara 26:205

أَفَرَءَيْتَ إِن مَّتَّعْنَـٰهُمْ سِنِينَ

“Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years”

Saheeh International

Essence

The ayah grants the best case, long and pleasant years, and asks you to picture it before reading on.

A reflection

Every year on the calculator was His to give

The ayah speaks in the first person: in mattaʿnāhum, 'if We let them enjoy'. The years are not described as something they earned, saved or seized. They are something given.

Think of an online retirement calculator. A man in his forties enters his savings and his pension. He drags the slider for 'age at death' to eighty, then ninety, then a hundred. The graph stretches out, comfortable and green. He feels oddly reassured, as if he has just added the years himself.

But the slider moves nothing in the real world. Not one extra morning was created by his finger. The ayah names the One who actually holds that slider.

This is where the ego quietly shrinks. Pride assumes that a long, pleasant life is a reward for good planning, good genes and good choices. The ayah does not deny the planning. It simply reminds us whose gift the time was in the first place.

Then it does something unexpected. It grants the best case. One classical commentator reads the ayah like this: suppose it is just as they believe, and they are given long lives in safety. Another gives a parallel. It is like saying to a man proud of his clan and wealth: 'Suppose they grow beyond anything you hope. Is death not still after it?'

So the argument does not depend on life being short. Even a long, easy life is a gift from Allah, and a gift has a giver who can ask about it.

Does Allah need us to admit that our years are His? No. He loses nothing if we forget. The reminder is for the one holding the slider, so that he holds it humbly. A borrowed life is lived differently from an owned one.
