ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ
“And then there came to them that which they were promised?”
Saheeh International
Essence
However long the comfortable years, what was promised arrives, as it already has six times in this one surah.
A reflection
A promise with six receipts in the same surah
By the time a reader reaches this ayah, the surah has already shown what 'then it came' looks like. Six times.
Go back through the stories. Pharaoh's army followed Musa into the sea: 'Then We drowned the others' (26:66). Nuh's people mocked the ark: 'Then We drowned the rest afterwards' (26:120). 'Ad called Hud a liar: 'So they denied him, and We destroyed them' (26:139). Thamud hamstrung the she-camel: 'So the punishment seized them' (26:158).
Lut's people were warned: 'We rained down on them a rain; evil was the rain of those warned' (26:173). Shu'ayb's people demanded a piece of the sky to fall: 'The punishment of the Day of the Canopy seized them' (26:189).
Notice that the first two begin with the same word as our ayah: thumma, 'then'. The surah has trained the ear. When thumma appears, something that was promised is arriving.
So this ayah is not a new or untested claim. It is the seventh telling of a pattern the reader has just watched six times. Each people heard a warning, called it empty, enjoyed a stretch of ease, and then met what they had been told.
Only one long story in the surah breaks the pattern. Ibrahim's people are not destroyed in it. At its heart is a prayer and the sound heart (26:83-89), placed among the warnings like a door.
The people of Makkah were hearing all seven stories in a single recitation. Then the surah turned to them directly. The question was simple. You have heard what came to six peoples. Why would yours be different?
A reader today is invited to make the same crossing. The stories are not archives. They are a record of how promises from Allah behave.
