Al-Qasas 28:13

“So We restored him to his mother that she might be content and not grieve and that she would know that the promise of Allāh is true. But most of them [i.e., the people] do not know.”

Essence

Allah returned Musa to his mother so her grief would end and she would know His promise true, a truth most people never learn.

A reflection

The only promise that never needs an excuse

A family is having an extension built. The builder promised completion by March. In March it becomes May, because of the rain. In May it becomes July, because of a supplier. By October there have been four dates and four excuses. None of the excuses is a lie. He simply promised something that was never in his hands.

Every human promise carries that hidden clause. We pledge tomorrow as though we owned it. Our health, our money, other people's choices and the weather all sit between our word and its keeping. The ego hides this from us. We say 'I will' with a confidence we have not earned.

This ayah sets one promise apart. Wa-li-taʿlama anna waʿda allāhi ḥaqqun: so that she would know Allah's promise is true. Allah had made two promises to this woman. He would return her son, and He would make him one of the messengers (28:7). The first was kept within days. The second would be kept decades later. Neither needed an excuse, because nothing stands between Allah's word and its keeping.

The word ḥaqq carries the picture. The lexicons speak of what holds firm, of tightly woven cloth, of a pivot turning true in its socket. A promise that is ḥaqq does not slip.

This should make us humbler about our own word, not prouder. The Quran teaches elsewhere not to say 'I will do it tomorrow' without adding 'if Allah wills' (18:23-24). That phrase is not a loophole. It is an honest confession of who actually owns tomorrow.

Allah does not need us to admire His reliability. Our praise adds nothing to a promise already kept. Seeing it is for our sake: it teaches us where to rest our weight.
