Al-Qiyamah 75:12

إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْمُسْتَقَرُّ

“To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every restless road you are on ends at one address, and that Day everything that has been moving comes to rest with your Lord.

A reflection

The meeting where He speaks last

In some offices there is a senior partner who always speaks last. He lets the meeting run and hears every view. Then he gives his own, and the matter is closed. Everyone knows the decision was never really in the room until he spoke. Most of us enjoy that position whenever we can get it. Being the place where things end is a quiet pleasure of the ego.

This ayah takes that position away from every creature at once. In the Arabic, 'to your Lord' comes first, ahead of what it describes. The commentators note that this order narrows the meaning. To your Lord, and to no one else, is the settling: every journey, every judgement, every final word.

They spell out what that covers. All the servants' affairs return to His judgement, and no one else rules in them. Their final place, in the Garden or the Fire, is His to assign. One commentary sets it beside another ayah about that Day: 'To whom does the dominion belong today? To Allah, the One, the Irresistible' (40:16). Another adds a striking phrase. On that Day, people will be unable to settle anywhere but with Him.

Now look at what we build to make ourselves the end point. The business that 'answers to no one'. The family where nothing is decided without our blessing. The online following that waits on our verdict. This ayah does not abolish them today. It shows you where each of their roads runs out. The senior partner, too, will stand in a meeting where he does not speak last.

Someone may ask why Allah insists that everything ends with Him. In a person, we would call that vanity. But human vanity claims something false, out of need. Allah is free of need: if everyone on earth disbelieved, He would remain free of need and praised (14:8). He is not grabbing the last word. He is telling you where it already is, so that you can face the right way. That is not pride. It is directions, given to the one who needs them.
