Al-Qasas 28:6

“And establish them in the land and show Pharaoh and [his minister] Hāmān and their soldiers through them[1094] that which they had feared.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Pharaoh's precautions end by showing him, through the people he crushed, the very thing he spent his reign trying to prevent.

A reflection

The precaution that delivered what it feared

The commentaries explain why Pharaoh killed the boys. One early account says a soothsayer told him a boy would be born that year who would take his kingdom. Another says the Egyptians had heard an old promise handed down from Ibrahim: a child of his line would bring down Egypt's king. Either way, Pharaoh had a warning, and he acted on it.

His answer was a system. Register the pregnancies. Watch the births. Kill the boys. When his labour force began to shrink, kill in one year and spare the next. It was thorough, cold and well staffed. In its own terms, it was excellent risk management.

The ayah sums up all of it in a few words: mā kānū yaḥdharūn, what they had been guarding against. The lexicons give this root one sense: guarding yourself and staying alert. A classical work on near-synonyms adds a fine distinction. Ḥadhar is guarding against something that has not yet come, but is expected.

Then Allah says: wa-nuriya, and We will show them. Show them what? Exactly the thing they guarded against. Not some other disaster. That very one, arriving through the very channel they had tried to close. One commentator puts it bluntly: no precaution avails against a decree.

Picture a tech billionaire who builds a bunker for the end of the world. It has its own air supply, its own water and a year of food. Late at night he still frets. Will the guards stay loyal when money means nothing? Every wall he adds reveals another door he cannot lock.

That is the ego's oldest dream: with enough foresight and control, nothing can reach me. Pharaoh had more control than anyone of his age. It bought him nothing against one sentence from Allah.

Is this ayah gloating? Does Allah need to display His power over a tyrant? No. He is free of any need (35:15). The showing is for the oppressed, who had watched their sons die. And it is for us, so that we stop placing our trust in our own precautions.
