Ali 'Imran 3:10
“Indeed, those who disbelieve - never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allāh at all. And it is they who are fuel for the Fire.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Money and children are the two things people most trust to protect them, and before Allah neither can stand in for anything at all.
A reflection
The two things on the desk
On a man's desk at work there are two things he looks at when the day goes badly. In the drawer, a pension statement he has read more times than he would admit. On top, a photo of three children squinting into a seaside sun. Between them, he feels safe.
The ayah names exactly those two: amwāluhum wa awlāduhum, their wealth and their children. For the first hearers, māl most often meant camels and flocks, the herd a family's whole future rested on. Children were the other half of security: hands for the work, swords for the feud, someone to carry the name.
The ayah says that for those who reject Allah, neither will avail them against Him, shayʾan, at all. One classical commentator read it as: in place of His mercy, in place of obeying Him. Then he set beside it a line the Prophet ﷺ said after every prayer. Sahih al-Bukhari records it: the fortune of the fortunate does not benefit him against You.
The ayah describes those who disbelieve. But it is also a mirror for the believer at the desk. Which of the two does he actually trust more, on a bad day, than his Lord? Another ayah says it plainly: it is not your wealth or your children that bring you near to Us (34:37).
None of this asks him to throw away the statement or the photo. Saving is wise, and children are a mercy. It asks only that he stop mistaking them for a refuge. They are gifts to be grateful for, not walls to hide behind.
Next time the day goes badly, look at both. Then say the line from after the prayer, and mean it.
