Ali 'Imran 3:142

“Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allāh has not yet made evident those of you who fight in His cause and made evident those who are steadfast?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Did you reckon on entering the Garden while no striving had yet come from you, and no steadfastness.

A reflection

Only one register is being kept

Behind a museum's galleries is a store holding many times more objects than the public ever sees. One rule governs the whole building. An object exists if it is in the accession register. A beautiful thing in a box with no number is, as far as the institution is concerned, not there.

This ayah does something grammatically strange, and the commentaries slow down over it.

It says Allah has not yet known those of you who strove. Read flat, the negation lands on His knowing. But the commentators are unanimous that what is negated is the thing known, not the knowing. One puts the sense plainly: did you reckon on entering the Garden while no striving has issued from you.

Then a note in the margins of one commentary says something worth holding.

Expressing the absence of a thing by the absence of knowledge belongs to Allah's knowledge alone. Because if His knowledge does not attach to a thing's existence, the non-existence of that thing follows necessarily. With any other knower, a fact can exist unknown. With Him, it cannot.

So His register is not a record of reality. It is the measure of it.

Now turn that on the way we actually live, because this is where vanity goes quiet.

Most of us keep a second register, and we keep it carefully. It holds the things that were seen. The help that was noticed. The restraint someone witnessed. The long night nobody thanked us for, filed under grievance precisely because it was not entered anywhere.

That register is held in other people's memories, and it is a poor archive. It is edited, it fades, and it closes when they do.

One commentary draws exactly this out of the wording. There is a hint here, it says, towards abandoning showing off, because what is intended is Allah's knowledge, not people's.

Which has a consequence most of us would rather not do the arithmetic on. Anything done so that it would be seen has been entered in the register that gets thrown away. And the unnumbered box in the store, the thing nobody knew about, is in the only catalogue there is.

So pick one good thing this week that nobody will ever learn about, and do it without leaving a trace. Then notice how much of you objects.
