Ali 'Imran 3:182

ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَيْسَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِ

“That is for what your hands have put forth and because Allāh is not ever unjust to [His] servants."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Nothing is added to your account: what arrives was sent ahead by your own hands, and He never misplaces a thing.

A reflection

The standard nothing else can check

The scales in a butcher's shop are checked against a test weight. That weight is checked against a better one held by the inspectorate. That one is checked against a national standard, and the national standard is compared with a definition agreed across the world. Follow the chain up far enough and it stops. At the top there is one thing that is not measured against anything, because it is what measuring means.

And Allah is not unjust to the servants. A fair reader will feel the obvious objection. A claim of justice is cheap when the one making it cannot be audited. Who checks Him.

Sit with why that question feels so natural to us. We are creatures who have been short-changed, and our instinct is to demand an independent weight. But an independent standard above Allah is not a higher authority. It is a contradiction. Whatever stood above Him would be Him. The chain does not go up for ever, and the fact that it stops is not a loophole in the argument. It is the argument.

Now the word. Ẓulm, in the lexicons, is not first of all unfairness. It is putting a thing in a place that is not its own. A herdsman ẓalama his milk-skin when he poured from it before the churning was done. Ground was maẓlūma when somebody dug where digging never belonged. An Arab proverb says that whoever sets the wolf to guard the flock has done ẓulm. He has put the wolf where it does not go. That picture is established in the dictionaries.

So the sentence means more than He plays fair. It means nothing in His decisions is ever out of place. Not misfiled, not mistimed, not in the wrong hands.

And the form is intensive: ẓallām, the pattern used for a trade, like perfumer or blacksmith. The grammarians give several readings of the negation, and the plain shared sense of all of them is the same. This is not something attributed to Him at all.

Which is where arrogance quietly dies. We want the right to weigh Him, and what we actually need is a weight that is not for sale. The pride that demands to audit the standard has nothing to put in the other pan.
