Ali 'Imran 3:19

“Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allāh is Islām. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allāh, then indeed, Allāh is swift in [taking] account.”

Essence

The way Allah accepts is handing yourself over to Him; people rarely split from ignorance, but from rivalry after they knew.

A reflection

Pick and mix

A nineteen-year-old explains his faith to his grandmother over Sunday lunch. A bit of meditation, a bit of charity, no rules he hasn't chosen himself. 'Pick and mix,' he says, pleased. She asks gently who he thinks is doing the picking.

Inna al-dīna ʿinda llāhi al-islām: the way of life with Allah is islām. Two modern commentaries define it in the same words. It is yielding to Allah alone in obedience, and surrendering to Him in servanthood. Another says it is the way all the messengers were sent with, built on His oneness.

The root pictured that surrender vividly. A traveller reaching a camp at dusk would call out salām: no weapon, no war between us. Aslama was to hand something over. Islām is laying down your weapons before the One who made you, and handing Him the keys.

The ego dislikes nothing more. It wants religion on its own terms: the parts that feel good, curated, revisable. Pride is the insistence that I decide what counts. The ayah's quiet phrase ʿinda llāh, with Allah, moves the decision to where it belongs.

Isn't demanding submission the mark of a tyrant? A tyrant needs your submission to feed his power. Allah needs nothing; He is free of need of the worlds (29:6). And He is sarīʿ al-ḥisāb, swift in reckoning: the verdict on whose way was right is His, not ours.

The grandmother's question is the right one. In every 'pick and mix', someone is choosing. The ayah asks you to let the choosing pass from the ego to its Owner.
