Ali 'Imran 3:21

“Those who disbelieve in the signs of Allāh and kill the prophets without right and kill those who order justice from among the people - give them tidings of a painful punishment.”

Essence

The ayah places ordinary people who call for fairness beside the prophets, and warns everyone who silences either.

A reflection

Prophets, and the people who ask for fairness

A care worker reports that residents on one floor of her care home are being left in soiled sheets overnight. Nothing changes, except that she is moved to the worst shifts. Her colleagues stop sitting with her at break. Within a year she has left. The residents are still on that floor.

The ayah names those who kill the prophets without right. Then it adds a second group, and the addition is startling: wa yaqtulūna alladhīna yaʾmurūna bi-l-qisṭi mina al-nās. And they kill those among the people who command justice. Not prophets. Ordinary men and women who stood up and asked for fairness. One modern commentary describes them as those who command what is right and forbid what is wrong.

The Quran sets them side by side. In Allah's sight, the person who asks for a fair share for the weak stands in a line that runs back to the prophets.

Qisṭ, as an earlier ayah in this surah showed, is justice that can be seen: the fair share weighed in the open. That is exactly why its advocates are hated. They make unfairness visible, and the powerful prefer it hidden.

Killing is the extreme. Most silencing is quieter: the worse shift, the frozen promotion, the whispering campaign, the friend who stops returning calls. The ayah's warning reaches its spirit.

Two questions for the reader. Have I ever helped, even by silence, to push out someone who asked for fairness? And when it is my turn to speak, will I accept the cost?

This week, find one person who has spoken up for fairness and paid for it. Tell them, privately, that they were right.
