Al-Isra 17:10

وَأَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ أَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا

“And that those who do not believe in the Hereafter - We have prepared for them a painful punishment.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Folded into the Quran's good news is a plain warning: for those who deny the Hereafter, a painful punishment is already prepared.

A reflection

The end of answering to no one

A senior manager deletes an email trail on a Friday evening. The decision it records cost several people their jobs, and it was not honest. He tells himself nobody will ever ask. In a sense he is right. No one in his building will.

Under that small act sits one of the largest beliefs a person can hold: that there is no final court, so he is his own. The ego loves this belief more than any pleasure. It makes the self the last word on its own life. Whatever it decides was fine, was fine.

This ayah ends that arrangement in four words. Aʿtadnā lahum ʿadhāban alīmā: We have prepared for them a painful punishment. Alīm is pain felt to the full. One old poet pictured a heat so fierce it slapped the faces of camels driven on through it. The speaker does not ask whether the manager believes. The preparation is already done. His belief was never what made the Hereafter real; it only decided whether he would be ready for it.

Someone may object that this sounds like a deity who demands recognition, threatening pain to those who refuse to believe in him. But look at what is being denied here. Not a name to be praised. A day of accounts. One classical commentary explains: those who do not believe in the return, and in reward and punishment, therefore do not guard themselves from wrongdoing. The Hereafter is not about soothing Allah's pride. 'If you disbelieve, Allah is free of need of you, yet He does not approve disbelief for His servants' (39:7).

The day of accounts is for the people in that email: the ones who lost their jobs and were never told why. Without a final court, they simply lose.

That is humbling for every one of us, not only the manager. There is no deleted trail. Before you close the next small file you would rather nobody opened, remember who has already prepared the room where it will be read.
