Ali 'Imran 3:72

“And a faction of the People of the Scripture say [to each other], "Believe in that which was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day and reject it at its end that perhaps they will return [i.e., abandon their religion],”

Saheeh International

Essence

A faction planned to profess belief in the morning and renounce it by evening, so that believers would doubt and turn back.

A reflection

A trick that is named loses its power

A bank sends every customer a short message. 'We will never ask you to move money to a safe account'. Months later, a calm voice on the phone asks one customer to do exactly that. She laughs, says 'nice try', and hangs up.

This ayah does something similar. It reveals a plan made in private. A faction agreed among themselves to declare belief at the start of the day and renounce it by its end. A modern commentary gives their hope. The believers would doubt, and say: 'They know the scriptures better than us, and they went back'.

A classical commentator asks why Allah disclosed the scheme, and gives three reasons. It was agreed in secret, so revealing it was news from the unseen. Once the believers were told, the trick could have no effect on their hearts. And being exposed would deter the schemers from trying the like again.

The second reason is the strategic heart of it. Manipulation depends on surprise. A tactic you have been warned about in advance loses most of its force. The Quran did not simply answer the doubt after it spread. It named the method before it could work.

This is a lesson for parents, teachers and anyone who cares for others' faith. Do not wait for the doubts to arrive. Name the common tricks in advance: the selective quote, the manufactured departure, the false expert. A young person who has been told how the trick works is far harder to fool.
