Al-Baqarah 2:14

وَإِذَا لَقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ شَيَـٰطِينِهِمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِءُونَ

“And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers."”

Saheeh International

Essence

To believers they say a thin 'we believe'; alone with their ringleaders they speak with full conviction: 'we are with you, we were only mocking'.

A reflection

Who gets your strongest sentences?

In a Monday meeting, a manager announces a new policy. One team member nods and says it sounds fine. That evening in the pub, the same man leans forward to two colleagues. With total conviction he calls it the worst decision the company has ever made, and tells them he is with them. His real voice was never in the meeting room.

One classical commentary spots the same pattern in the grammar of this ayah. To the believers, the hypocrites say āmannā: a plain verb, 'we believe'. To their ringleaders they say innā maʿakum: truly, we are with you. Then they add innamā naḥnu mustahziʾūn: we were nothing but mocking. That is a noun sentence, strengthened with emphatic particles.

Why the difference? The commentary answers that what they said to the believers did not deserve the strongest form of speech. There was no conviction behind it to express. What they said to their allies came from what they truly held, so it came out with full force.

This is one of the quiet ways the Quran reveals hearts. You can learn a great deal about a person from where their sentences are strong. The same is true of us. With whom do I speak with full conviction about my faith? With whom do I say only the minimum, to get through the conversation?

There are situations where caution is wise, and not every setting calls for a declaration. But the ayah invites a different check. If my most sincere, emphatic speech is always reserved for people who mock what I say I believe, something is wrong. My public words and my private words are pulling in opposite directions.

The believer's aim is simpler. Let the voice in the meeting and the voice in the pub be the same voice. Then there is nothing to manage, nothing to remember, and no one to be afraid of meeting.
