Ali 'Imran 3:99
“Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you avert from the way of Allāh those who believe, seeking to make it [seem] deviant, while you are witnesses [to the truth]? And Allāh is not unaware of what you do."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Say: why do you turn believers away from Allah's road, trying to bend it, when you know better, and Allah misses nothing you do?
A reflection
Nothing you do is unbranded
A shopkeeper's son has been taking a few pounds from the till most weeks for about a year. He has become relaxed about it. What he does not know is that his father noticed in the second week. He has been waiting, quietly, to see whether the boy would stop on his own.
The ayah ends: and Allah is not unaware of what you do. One concise commentary adds the sentence that makes the ending land. He only defers you to your appointed time, so that He may repay you.
So delay is not absence. It is the most common reason people stop believing they are being seen, and it proves nothing at all.
The word is from gh-f-l, and its pictures are unexpectedly concrete. One lexicon says the root is leaving a thing through inattention, and sometimes on purpose. Anything without a mark on it was ghufl, as though it had been overlooked. Open land with no waymarks was ghufl. So was a camel carrying no brand, and a man not yet marked by experience. Another lexicon notes that leaving a text without its dots was ighfāl. All of this is established.
That gives the ending a particular shape. An unbranded camel can be taken by anyone and claimed by anyone, because nothing on it records whose it is. The ayah says: nothing you do is like that.
And here the ego should feel its own smallness, because the ego lives on the hope of unrecorded moments. Not the big sins, which we half expect to be registered. The quiet ones. The warm feeling when a rival stumbled. The information withheld so that someone else looked slow. The sentence said to a child in a tone we would not use in front of guests.
We pass most of our lives unmarked to ourselves, doing things without noticing we do them. The ayah's claim is simply that we are the only ones not noticing.
And notice what is not being said. He is not described as watching in order to catch. He is described as not inattentive, which is a statement about Him rather than a threat about us. Inattention is a lapse in watchfulness, and there is no lapse in Him.
So the honest response is not fear exactly. It is a small daily correction: assume the dots are on the page. Act as if the camel has your brand on it, because it does.
