Ali 'Imran 3:98
“Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allāh while Allāh is Witness over what you do?"”
Saheeh International
Essence
Say: People of the Scripture, why do you cover over Allah's signs, when Allah is Witness to everything you do?
A reflection
Someone in the room was there
A man has told the same story at family dinners for fifteen years. Each telling improves it a little: the weather worse, his own part larger, the other man's remark sharper. His brother, who was actually there, has never once corrected him. He simply looks at his plate.
Everything the ayah says about Allah as shahīd is in that look.
The lexicons bind three things into this root and never let them separate: being present, knowing, and making known. A mashhad was the place where people gathered. A wife was mushhid when her husband was at home. The tongue was called al-shāhid, the one that tells what the eye saw. So shahāda is never hearsay. It is what you say because you were there. That is established.
So this is not surveillance language, which is how modern ears hear it. A camera records. A witness was present.
And notice where the ego goes. We spend an extraordinary amount of energy managing what is seen. The version of the meeting we give afterwards. The sentence about our own role. The slight rearrangement of who said what first. Most of it is not lying. It is editing, and the editing is so continuous that we forget it is happening.
The ayah quietly removes the point of all of it. Not by threatening, but by stating a fact: He was there.
And He was there for the parts nobody else saw, which is the half of this that should make the ego sit down. The flash of contempt that never reached your face. The real reason you volunteered. The hour you spent composing a message and then deleted it, which was still an hour spent that way.
One concise commentary adds only four words to the ayah's ending: so He will repay you for it.
So the practical test is small and uncomfortable. Next time you give an account of something that happened, give the version your brother would recognise. Not the improved one. You are editing for an audience that already has the footage.
