Ar-Rum 30:5

بِنَصْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ يَنصُرُ مَن يَشَآءُ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

“In the victory of Allāh.[1141] He gives victory to whom He wills, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Victory is named as Allah’s help before anyone’s win: given where He wills, by One Mighty enough to give it and Merciful in giving.

A reflection

Help is His before it is yours

Many people think one sentence is in the Quran. 'God helps those who help themselves.' It is quoted in speeches and printed on office walls. It is not in the Quran, and it is not a hadith. This ayah says something quite different.

Bi-naṣri Allāh, yanṣuru man yashāʾ: in the help of Allah; He helps whom He wills. A classical commentator noticed the order of the words. Here the noun comes first, 'the help of Allah', and only then the verb. Elsewhere the Quran reverses it: 'He supported you with His help' (8:26). There, he wrote, the point is the gift that happened. Here the point is its source. Help lies in Allah's hand. If He wills, He helps.

That is a blow to a particular pride. We like to think help is earned. The strong get it, the well prepared get it, the self-starters get it. The Sunnah tells a story that cuts the other way. Al-Bukhari records that a Companion named Saʿd thought he had merit over those below him. The Prophet ﷺ answered with a question. Are you given help and provision except through your weak ones?

Picture a founder telling the story of his first big contract. He speaks of the pitch, the late nights, his own nerve. He never learns the rest. The client's elderly mother had waited in his lobby that morning, confused and tired. The receptionist brought her tea and found her a chair. The client signed with the firm that had been kind to his mother.

Help often arrives through people we overlook, and by roads we never mapped. It reached the Romans through a decree they knew nothing of, announced in a city they never visited.

Does Allah insist on this so that He is credited? No. He is the Free of need (35:15), and our thanks add nothing to Him. The knowledge is for us. Whoever thinks help is earned grows proud when it comes and despairs when it does not. Whoever knows it is given can work hard, ask sincerely, and stay steady either way.

Effort still matters; the Quran is full of commands to strive. But effort is the door you knock on, not the house. The house is His help.
