Ar-Rum 30:7

“They know what is apparent of the worldly life, but they, of the Hereafter, are unaware.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Knowing how the world works but not where it is going is, in this ayah, no different from not knowing at all.

A reflection

They do not know. They know.

Most readers hear this ayah as a description of other people. Materialists. Atheists. The ones on the business pages. We nod, sure that we stand on the other side of the line.

Read it beside the ayah before it. 30:6 ends: most people do not know, lā yaʿlamūn. 30:7 begins at once: they know, yaʿlamūn. The negative and the positive of one verb sit side by side, with nothing between them.

A classical commentator saw a deliberate stroke here. He read the second as standing in the place of the first, as if replacing it. The point, he wrote, is that there is no difference between not knowing at all and knowing that goes no further than this world. The ayah takes knowledge away, hands it back, and shows the gift was empty.

Then it shrinks what they know still further. Ẓāhiran is indefinite: 'an outside', not 'the outside'. The same commentator noted that they do not even know all of this world's surfaces. They know one surface among many. Another added that they do not know this world as it really is. They know its pleasures, not its harms. They know that it exists, not that it ends.

So who is this about? The first hearers were Makkah's merchants, laughing at a promise. But the ayah describes a shape, and a shape can fit anyone. It fits a believer who prays five times a day and thinks about the Hereafter for five minutes a week. It fits an expert in any field, religious or worldly, who never asks where his own life is going.

The honest reading begins with an uncomfortable question. Measured by where my attention actually goes, is most of what I know the surface kind? The ayah is not asking what I affirm about the Hereafter. It is asking what I know, and how often my mind goes there.
