Al-Ahzab · Madani · ayah 8 of 73
Al-Ahzab 33:8
لِّيَسْـَٔلَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ عَن صِدْقِهِمْ ۚ وَأَعَدَّ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا
“That He may question the truthful about their truth.[1184] And He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful punishment.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Even the truthful, the prophets first, will be questioned about their truth; and for those who covered it, a punishment has already been made ready.
A reflection
If the truthful are asked, what of the rest?
The ayah gives the purpose of the covenant just described. It was taken so that He may question the truthful about their truthfulness.
Pause on who is being questioned. Not liars. Not hypocrites. The truthful. On one reading these are the prophets themselves, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad ﷺ. They will be asked how they delivered the message, and how their people answered.
One commentary draws the obvious conclusion. If the prophets are questioned, what of everyone else? Another puts it as a question that stays with you. When the truthful are asked and held to account for their truth, what do you suppose awaits the liars?
That is where the majesty lies. No rank places anyone above His questioning. No record of service, however long, buys an exemption. The greatest human beings who ever lived will stand and be asked.
This quietly undoes a common pride. Many of us assume that being on the right side settles the matter. We pray, we give, we hold the right views. Surely the questions are for other people. The ayah does not allow that comfort.
Picture a new director arriving at a charity with a troubled past. Her first act is to ask the trustees to audit her own expense claims, line by line, before anyone else's. The staff are startled. Then they understand. If the top is checked first, nobody below can feel above checking.
Some ask whether a God who questions His own messengers is simply asserting power. But He already knows every answer. The questioning adds nothing to His knowledge. It brings the truth into the open, and it humbles every ego that hoped to be waved through.
