Saba 34:11

“[Commanding him], "Make full coats of mail and calculate [precisely] the links, and work [all of you] righteousness. Indeed I, of what you do, am Seeing."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Dawud was told to make armour to measure and his household to do righteous work, under the gaze of the One who sees everything done.

A reflection

Work done in the King's sight

The ayah begins with a craft and ends with a gaze. Make full coats of mail, measure the linking, do righteous work. Then: innī bimā taʿmalūna baṣīr, I see all that you do.

Notice the voice. The ayah before spoke in the plural of majesty: We gave, We softened. Here it turns to the singular, innī, I. One commentator explains the effect in plain terms. Anyone working for a king, who knows the king can see him, does the work well. He perfects it and pours his effort into it.

Picture a kitchen fitter on the last day of a job. He is screwing on the back panel of a cabinet, the side that will face the wall for twenty years. He sets each screw as carefully as the hinges on the doors. His apprentice asks why he bothers. 'Because I'll know,' he says.

The ayah gives a larger reason than 'I'll know'. Someone else knows. The ego works for an audience. It saves its best effort for whatever will be seen, praised or posted, and skimps on the back panel. The Prophet ﷺ described the highest level of faith in exactly these terms. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report it: worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, He sees you.

Does Allah need to remind us that He is watching, like an anxious manager? No. He is free of all need, and our work adds nothing to Him (35:15). One commentator glosses the phrase: nothing is hidden from Me, and I will reward you for all of it. The gaze is not a supervisor's suspicion. It is the guarantee that nothing done well is wasted.

So the back panel matters. Not because a customer will turn the cabinet round, but because the only eyes that finally count have already seen it. That humbles the showing-off in us, and frees us from needing applause.
