Saba 34:10

“And We certainly gave David from Us bounty. [We said], "O mountains, repeat [Our] praises with him, and the birds [as well]." And We made pliable for him iron,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah addressed the mountains by name, softened the hardest metal in one man's hands, and listed his accepted repentance among his favours.

A reflection

Mountains addressed by name

The ayah could have simply reported the gift: We gave Dawud the echo of the mountains, and the birds. Instead it lets us overhear the command itself. Yā jibālu: O mountains.

One classical commentary stops on exactly this choice. How great the difference is, it says. The direct address carries the might of lordship and the grandeur of divinity. Mountains are spoken to as beings of understanding, who obey when commanded and answer when called. The point is that nothing, living or lifeless, speaking or silent, refuses His will.

Then notice the small word placed before the gift: minnā, from Us. A theologian explains it with a picture from court. 'The king gave him a robe' is a complete sentence. 'The king gave him a robe from himself' tells you it came from the king's own wardrobe. Another commentary says minnā means directly, with no go-between.

Now set that beside us. A man who manages a hundred staff cannot make his own thumb stop scrolling at midnight. Most of us cannot command our own eyelids when the dawn alarm rings. Yet mountains, the heaviest and most unmoving things the first hearers knew, answered a single word. That alone should take the swagger out of every title we hold.

Is it vanity for Allah to announce that He gave, and that mountains obey Him? Vanity is a creature claiming a greatness it lacks, hoping to win something by the claim. Allah lacks nothing and wins nothing by the telling. He is free of all need (35:15). The telling is for us. It stops Dawud, and every gifted person after him, from mistaking the gift for his own achievement.

The ego wants the credit to come to rest on us. This ayah moves it, gently, to where it always belonged. From Us.
