Saba 34:21

“And he had over them no authority except [it was decreed] that We might make evident who believes in the Hereafter from who is thereof in doubt. And your Lord, over all things, is Guardian.[1230]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Iblis was given no power to force anyone, only a voice; the test sorts belief from doubt, and your Lord keeps watch over everything.

A reflection

The tempter works inside a fence he did not build

The ayah ends on a quiet sentence that changes everything before it. Wa-rabbuka ʿalā kulli shayʾin ḥafīẓ: and your Lord is Guardian over all things.

'All things' includes the tempter. Iblis whispers, decorates and promises, but he does it inside a perimeter he did not draw. One commentator draws out the logic of the word. To guard something, you must know it fully and have power over it. The ignorant cannot guard, and neither can the weak. So ḥafīẓ gathers knowledge and power into one Name. Another commentator states the result plainly: by His guarding and keeping, those who were saved were saved.

That is where the ego is quietly corrected. Picture a woman who has not missed a prayer in ten years. Her cousin struggles, praying some days and not others. At family gatherings the woman says nothing unkind. Yet inside she has filed her cousin under 'weak' and herself under 'strong'. She thinks her record is her own fortress.

The ayah says otherwise. Her ten years were kept. The tempter had the same access to her as to anyone, and Someone else held him back. Pride in our own steadiness forgets who is doing the steadying. The moment we credit the wall to ourselves, we have begun to lean on something that is not there.

A fair question follows. Why does Allah keep describing Himself in such terms? Does He need to be acknowledged as the Guardian? He does not. Nothing is added to Him by our knowing it. The Name is for us. It turns arrogance into gratitude, and it turns fear into calm. The one who knows who is guarding can stop boasting, and can also stop panicking.

So the next time you hold firm against something, say it inwardly: I was kept. Then make a sincere duʿāʾ for someone who was not.
