Saba 34:30

قُل لَّكُم مِّيعَادُ يَوْمٍ لَّا تَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ عَنْهُ سَاعَةً وَلَا تَسْتَقْدِمُونَ

“Say, "For you is the appointment of a Day [when] you will not remain thereafter an hour, nor will you precede [it]."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Asked mockingly for a date, the reply gives a fact: your appointment is fixed, and no one can move it by an hour.

A reflection

The one appointment no assistant can move

For twenty years a man's assistant has managed his diary. Board meetings slide to Thursday when he is tired. A dinner with a minister moves twice, and the minister's office apologises. His dentist, his auditors and his own children have learned to wait. Somewhere along the way he stopped noticing. Time, for him, has become something that bends.

This ayah is spoken into that feeling. In the previous ayah the deniers asked, mockingly, when this promise would come. They spoke as if the date were open to negotiation, and the burden sat with the Prophet ﷺ. The reply does not offer a date. It offers a mīʿād: an appointment, the fixed time at which a promise is kept.

Notice what the sentence leaves out. It does not ask for their agreement. It simply tells them: you have it. In a human diary an appointment belongs to two parties, and either can ring to rearrange. This one has a single Owner, and He has handed the diary to no one.

That is where the ego shrinks. Much of our pride rests on a quiet control of time. We keep people waiting. We say 'not now'. We push the hard conversation to next month, and the repentance to next year. The ayah reminds us that the largest appointment of our lives was booked without consulting us. We cannot cancel it, and no importance earns a later slot.

One commentator notices that the verbs are given to them, not to the day. It does not say 'it will not be moved'. It says you will not delay it, and you will not bring it forward. He reads this as extra emphasis that the day will surely come. The people who thought they held the pen are addressed directly.

Humility here is not humiliation. It is standing in the right place: a servant with a booking he did not make, told in advance, so that he can prepare.

Look at your own diary this week. Find one thing you keep moving simply because you can. Ask whether it is something Allah asked of you.
