Saba 34:23
“And intercession does not benefit with Him except for one whom He permits. [And those wait] until, when terror is removed from their hearts,[1231] they will say [to one another], "What has your Lord said?" They will say, "The truth." And He is the Most High, the Grand.”

Essence
No one speaks for anyone before Him without leave; even the angels are stunned at His word, then ask: what did your Lord say?
A reflection
Wings like a chain dragged over smooth rock
Sahih al-Bukhari records the Prophet ﷺ explaining this ayah. When Allah decrees a matter in the heaven, the angels beat their wings in submission to His word. The sound is like a chain dragged over smooth rock. When the terror is lifted from their hearts, they ask: 'What did your Lord say?' They answer: 'The truth. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.'
Sit with the picture. The angels are not lazy or rebellious. They are the nearest of creation, and they never disobey. Yet at a word from their Lord they are struck with awe until their hearts are released. The commentators describe trembling from reverence, until something like a faint overtakes them.
Now set that beside an ordinary wedding. A reciter opens the ceremony with a few ayat. At the back tables, guests carry on chatting about the food, the parking and the bride's dress. A phone rings and is answered. The same Speech before which the angels fold their wings is background noise at table twelve.
That is where the ego is brought low. We are not more important than the angels. We are not busier than they are. Our ease with His words is not a sign of familiarity; it is a sign of distance. The ayah ends by naming Him: al-ʿAliyy al-Kabīr, the Most High, the Most Great. All our self-importance is measured against that.
A fair question follows. Why would a merciful Lord let His angels be overwhelmed like this? Does He need their fear? No. Their awe adds nothing to Him. It is simply the truth of what they meet. A creature who truly grasps who is speaking cannot stay unmoved. The angels' fear is knowledge, not torment.
So the next time the Quran is recited near you, stop talking. Let it be the one moment in the room when you behave like the angels.
