Ya-Sin 36:31
أَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْقُرُونِ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ
“Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them - that they to them[1265] will not return?”
Saheeh International
Essence
Generation after generation went over the ridge roped together, and not one string of them has ever been led back.
A reflection
Every generation thinks it is the final draft
In the old hall of many schools there are honours boards. Gold letters on dark wood, one name for each year, running back over a century. A signwriter comes every summer to add the newest name at the bottom. The boy whose name is going up watches with his parents. It is hard, standing there, not to feel that the list has been leading up to you.
Then you read the top of the board. Every one of those names once stood exactly where he is standing, and felt exactly that. Most of them are dead. None of their parents are alive.
This ayah does the same thing on the scale of history. Kam ahlaknā: how many We destroyed. The word kam here is not a real question waiting for a figure. The grammarians call it the kam of report, and it means a great many, beyond counting. No number is given because no number would be small enough to bear.
And notice who is speaking. We destroyed. Not "they declined" or "they fell". Whole ages, with their kings and markets and confidence, are gathered into one verb with Him as its subject.
The phrase has a habit of returning. The repeated-phrase data records it eleven times, across ten surahs. Each time it asks the people listening how many came before them. It is one of the Quran's steadiest refrains.
Here is what it does to the ego. Every age, ours included, quietly assumes it is the final draft. The earlier generations were rough versions; we are the finished one. We have the tools, the knowledge, the perspective.
The ayah does not argue with that. It just shows you the top of the board. Every one of them thought so too. And not one of them was so finished that He could not close the book on it with a single verb.
