Ya-Sin 36:32

وَإِن كُلٌّ لَّمَّا جَمِيعٌ لَّدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ

“And indeed, all of them will yet be brought present before Us.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every generation that went over the ridge flows back, like water from every slope, into one place before Him, and not one is missing.

A reflection

Brought, not arriving

Watch the queue at airport security. A man who is used to rooms waiting for him stands in socks holding his belt. His phone goes in a grey tray beside a student's. Nobody checks who he is before telling him to step through again. For two minutes he is exactly as important as everyone else in the line.

We resent those moments because they take away the one thing status buys: control over how we arrive. Late, early, announced, unannounced, with notes, with people. Most of our dignity is in choosing our entrance.

This ayah removes the choice entirely. Muḥḍarūn is a passive participle. They are not described as coming. They are made present. The lexicons note that this form is most often used of people brought against their will. No one chooses the hour, the order, or the company.

And look where they are brought: ladaynā, before Us, in Our presence. The word does not mean a distant court somewhere. It is the language of nearness, of being right beside. Every king of every generation in the previous ayah arrives in the same way, with the same empty hands.

The commentaries add a further line. The sentence answers a quiet hope that the destroyed are simply left. One commentator quotes a poet: if, when we died, we were left alone, death would be every living thing's rest. But when we die we are raised, and asked after about everything.

There is a humbling here that goes further than any airport. Our sense of self is built on being someone who decides. This ayah reminds you that on the most important occasion of your existence you will decide nothing. You will be brought. The ego has no entrance planned for that.
