Ya-Sin · Makki · ayah 7 of 83
Ya-Sin 36:7
لَقَدْ حَقَّ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَىٰٓ أَكْثَرِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
“Already the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect upon most of them, so they do not believe.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The word fitted them as a pivot fits its socket, matching what they chose to be; and it says most, not all.
A reflection
A pivot that fits its socket
A carpenter is rehanging the old oak door of a village hall. It has no hinges. It turns on a pivot set into a stone socket in the floor, and the two have worn into each other over two centuries. When he lowers the door into place it turns without a sound. It fits because it was shaped by what it holds.
Many readers meet this ayah and hear something like a sealed verdict passed in advance. God decided they would not believe, so they did not. They never had a chance. That reading troubles people, and it should, because it is not what the commentaries say.
Look first at when the word came true. The modern concise commentaries are explicit. Punishment became due on most of them after the truth was presented to them and they rejected it. After it reached them through the Messenger, and they did not believe, and persisted.
Then look at the 'so' in 'so they do not believe'. A classical commentator weighs it carefully. The word being established is linked to their unbelief, he says, only because Allah knew beforehand their own bad choice and what they truly were. His knowledge, he adds, attaches to things only as they are in themselves. So there is no pure compulsion here. Others read the 'so' the other way round: their refusal is why the word became due. Either way, he notes, no compulsion follows.
The scholars have discussed decree and choice at length, and this entry will not settle what they did not. The plain shared sense is enough. Allah's knowledge comes first and misses nothing. Their choice was real and it was theirs.
The root of ḥaqqa carries the picture. One lexicon traces it to a perfect fit, like a door's pivot turning true in its socket. The word fits them because it matches what they chose to be.
