Ya-Sin 36:6
لِتُنذِرَ قَوْمًا مَّآ أُنذِرَ ءَابَآؤُهُمْ فَهُمْ غَـٰفِلُونَ
“That you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are unaware.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Heedlessness is not having never heard; it is a page whose dots have worn away, and the warning is sent precisely because of it.
A reflection
Heedless is not the same as never told
A man has walked under the same railway bridge to work for ten years. There is a mural on its wall. His visiting niece asks what it shows, and he has to stop, turn and look. He has passed it four thousand times. He has never seen it.
Most of us read this ayah as history. A people long ago, in a desert city, who had never had a prophet. Of course they were heedless. They had not been told. The word sits safely with them, fourteen centuries away.
The Arabic will not let it stay there. Ghafla is not ignorance. One lexicon of distinctions draws the line sharply. Forgetting erases a thing from memory. Heedlessness only fails to attend to it, while it remains there. The mural is still on the wall.
And a modern concise commentary closes the distance itself. Every community from which warning is cut off, it says, falls into heedlessness. Then it adds a line aimed squarely at Muslims. This is evidence that those who know Allah and His law must keep reminding, to wake the believers from their heedlessness.
So the heedless in this ayah are not only them. A person can recite Ya-Sin every Thursday night and be ghāfil of every word. The surah is still on the wall. We walk under it.
This is not said to wound. It is said because heedlessness is the most ordinary state of the human heart, and the least noticed. Nobody feels heedless. That is what heedlessness is.
The test is simple and a little uncomfortable. Pick any ayah of Ya-Sin you have recited a hundred times. Can you say what it asks of you? If not, the warning in this ayah has a second address, and it is yours.
