As-Saffat 37:105

قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ ٱلرُّءْيَآ ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

“You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.”

Saheeh International

Essence

'You have fulfilled the vision': Ibrahim is credited with the sacrifice he was ready to make, and so are all who do good.

A reflection

Fulfilled, though the knife never fell

Most people who know this story assume, without quite thinking it, that Ibrahim was praised for doing what the dream showed. But he did not do it. The boy was not sacrificed. So how can Allah say qad ṣaddaqta al-ruʾyā, you have fulfilled the vision?

The commentaries ask exactly this. One answers: he was counted as fulfilling it because he did everything within his power. What was really asked was that both surrender to Allah's command, and they did. Another explains that fulfilling a vision means giving it its full due in action, by resolve and preparation. It does not require the thing seen to happen exactly. A third says simply: you acted as one who truly believes it.

The word itself supports this. The root of ṣaddaqta had a picture for the first hearers. The lexicons describe a spear shaft that is ṣadq: hard, sound, straight through, the kind that does not snap under strain. This is an established image. Truth is called ṣidq for its strength. To ṣaddaqa a vision is to show, by how you act, that you held it as solid and true.

Picture a woman who promised her dying father that she would look after her disabled younger brother. Twenty years later she still does. Some years were easy, some nearly broke her. Her promise turned out to be ṣadq: it held under strain.

Ibrahim's belief in his Lord's command held under the heaviest strain a father could face. That is what Allah honours here. Not a body on an altar, but a heart that did not snap.

The assumption that Allah rewards only outcomes is quietly overturned. He rewards the sound heart and the full effort, and He decides the outcome Himself.
