وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
“And praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.”

Essence
The surah of rows, refutations and rescued messengers ends where the Quran begins: every praise, for every outcome, belongs to the Lord of the worlds.
A reflection
The last word is not the winners' name
As-Saffat has told six stories of messengers and the people who opposed them. It has promised that Our army will prevail (37:173). It has just sent peace upon the messengers. By every human instinct, the next line should honour the victors. Instead the surah's very last word goes up: and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
Two commentaries name what the praise is for here: the help given to the messengers, and the end of those who denied them. Another lists the possibilities. Praise for sending messengers at all, for every favour given to creation, for cutting off the wrongdoers. All of it is meant, it concludes, because praise covers everything.
Picture a twelve-year-old who has finally come top in her year's maths test. The results go up on the corridor board. She walks past three times before lunch, just to see her name. Most of us never quite stop doing that. The ego wants the credit to rest on us, at least for a moment.
The messengers had more right to that moment than anyone. They had been mocked, threatened and thrown into a fire. Yet the surah does not end with their names. It ends with His. That was their own way too: the help, the patience and the outcome all came from Him.
Someone may ask whether it is self-congratulation for Allah to close His own account of victory by praising Himself. But look at what the praise corrects. Without it, a listener might think the messengers won by their own strength, or that history simply turned their way. The last line puts the credit where it truly lies. It protects us from worshipping winners.
And Allah gains nothing from it. If you are grateful, He is pleased with it for you (39:7). The praise is His by right; the benefit of saying it is ours. It humbles our pride at the very moment pride is strongest: the moment we win.
