As-Saffat 37:4
إِنَّ إِلَـٰهَكُمْ لَوَٰحِدٌ
“Indeed, your God is One,”
Saheeh International
Essence
Three oaths by the angels lead to one sentence, said with every emphasis Arabic allows: your God is One.
A reflection
No one above Him to appeal to
Watch a site manager on a large building project. On site, his word is law. Contractors wait for his nod. Deliveries go where he points. Then his phone rings, and it is the client's chairman. His voice changes. He says 'of course' four times in a minute. Out on the scaffolding, the men notice and grin.
Every human authority has someone above it. That is why no human authority can quite carry the weight we sometimes put on it. There is always another office, another level, another person whose call makes you polite.
This ayah ends the chain. Inna ilāhakum la-wāḥid: your God is One. There is no chairman above Him, no partner beside Him, no rival to play off against Him. The rows of angels in the oaths stand before Him alone.
That is humbling in two directions. It humbles the proud, because no little kingdom we run is our own. A kitchen, a department, a family group chat: we rule nothing in it without Him. And it frees the anxious, because there is no higher court that can overturn His mercy.
Someone may ask: why does God insist on being worshipped alone? Isn't exclusive devotion something an insecure ruler demands? An insecure ruler demands it because he needs it. His throne depends on loyalty. Allah is free of all need (35:15). Our worship adds nothing to His kingdom, and our refusal takes nothing away.
The insistence is not for Him. It is the truth, and it is our freedom. A person with many masters is pulled apart. A person with One is whole. The ego wants to be a small god in its own corner. The ayah gently takes the title back, and gives us something better: one Lord, and rest.
