Luqman 31:21

“And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allāh has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers." Even if Satan was inviting them to the punishment of the Blaze?”

Essence

Offered Allah's own words, they answer with their fathers' habits; the ayah asks what every loyalty must face: even if it leads into fire?

A reflection

Even if: the question every loyalty must face

Every summer, a family drives to the coast by the old valley road. At the bottom of the valley the road dips through a ford. Grandad always drove straight through it, and so does Dad. One wet August the water is brown and fast. The depth post beside the ford shows it above the red mark. In the back seat the children start chanting: Grandad always went through.

The father stops the car. He has not stopped loving his father. He has simply met the question this ayah asks: a-wa law kāna, even if?

The commentaries explain the grammar. The question carries a picture of their state: would they follow their fathers even while Satan is calling them to the punishment of the Blaze? One reads it as astonishment mixed with denial. Satan calls them to punishment, Allah calls them to reward, and still they follow the first voice.

There is strategy in that small phrase. A depth post is a decision made in advance, on a dry day, by someone with a clear head. It says: below this line, the old way is fine; above it, no tradition wins. Its value is that you never have to decide at the water's edge, with the children chanting.

Every inherited arrangement needs one. The family firm that has always used the same supplier. The way your house has always handled money, or anger, or silence. The religious habit nobody remembers adopting. Ask of each one: is there any depth at which I would stop? If the honest answer is no, that is not loyalty. It is judgement handed over to the dead.

The Quran puts the post in plain sight. Here is what Allah has sent down. Hold every inherited thing against it, while the road is still dry. Then, when the water rises, you will not need to argue with anyone. You will only need to read the mark.
