Sad 38:19
وَٱلطَّيْرَ مَحْشُورَةً ۖ كُلٌّ لَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ
“And the birds were assembled, all with him repeating [praises].”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah gathered the birds round Dawud all at once, and every one kept returning his praise, as he kept returning to his Lord.
A reflection
Gathered, all at once, by Someone else
The ayah has only a handful of words, and the first two hold a lesson in grammar. Wa-l-ṭayra maḥshūratan: and the birds, gathered.
In the previous ayah the mountains 'glorify', a verb, renewed moment by moment. Here the birds are not being gathered bit by bit. They are maḥshūra, a participle: gathered, as one complete event. Two commentators explain the switch. The glorifying was meant to be pictured happening again and again. The gathering was not. Had the ayah said the birds were gathered one after another, one argues, it would miss the point. Gathering them all at once shows the greater power. And the Gatherer is Allah.
So the birds did not drift towards Dawud because he was charismatic, or because they liked the sound. They were gathered.
Picture a substitute warming up on the touchline. The whole stand rises and roars. He turns, flushed, and lifts a hand to the crowd. Then he sees the big screen. His team has scored at the other end. The roar was never his.
The ego makes that mistake constantly. When people gather around us, we assume we drew them. When doors open, we assume our knock opened them. This ayah humbles that pride. Even a prophet's flock of birds was Allah's gathering, not his pull.
Someone may object: why would Allah gather birds to glorify Him? Does He need a chorus? He does not. Everything glorifies Him, gathered or scattered. Nor does He need anyone's praise: 'if you disbelieve, Allah is free of need of you' (39:7). The gathering was an honour for Dawud, and a sign for those who hear of it. It is we who need to see creation turned towards its Maker.
When people gather around your work this week, hear the ayah's grammar. Gathered: by Him. Then thank the Gatherer before you thank the crowd.
