Sad 38:27

وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا بَـٰطِلًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ظَنُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ

“And We did not create the heaven and the earth and that between them aimlessly. That is the assumption of those who disbelieve, so woe to those who disbelieve from the Fire.”

Essence

Sky, earth and all between them were not made for nothing; to think they were is an assumption, and a ruinous one.

A reflection

Meaning you were handed, not meaning you make

Wa-mā khalaqnā al-samāʾa wa-l-arḍa wa-mā baynahumā. We did not create the sky, the earth, and all that lies between them. Take the last phrase slowly. All that lies between them: every cloud, every migrating flock, every creature that breathes. And you, reading this, are somewhere inside 'between them'.

Allah speaks here as the One who made all of it, and who alone can say what it is for. He does not ask the universe what it thinks it means. He tells it.

That cuts against a gentle modern pride. We are often told that life has no given meaning, so each of us must make our own. It sounds humble. Underneath it sits a very large claim. I, standing in one corner of 'all that lies between', am the author of what the whole thing signifies. The ego quietly promotes itself from a line in the book to the one who wrote it.

The ayah hands the pen back to its owner. Meaning was there before you arrived. Your task is not to invent it, but to find it and live up to it.

Someone may object that this is presumptuous. Who is God to announce what my life is for? Should I not be free to decide? But think of a father who sits with his teenage daughter and tells her why he chose her name. It was her great-aunt's, a woman who took in three orphaned cousins in a hard winter. The girl does not hear arrogance. She hears that she was wanted before she could want anything. A purpose given by the One who made you is not a cage. It is the sign that you were made on purpose.

And He needs none of it. The heavens do not complete Him, and our recognition adds nothing to Him. The announcement is for us. It lets the creature in the middle of 'all that lies between' stop mistaking itself for the centre.
