Al-An'am 6:73

“And it is He who created the heavens and earth in truth. And the day [i.e., whenever] He says, "Be," and it is, His word is the truth.[319] And His is the dominion [on] the Day the Horn is blown. [He is] Knower of the unseen[320] and the witnessed;[321] and He is the Wise, the Aware.”

Essence

In one breath the ayah runs from the sky's making to the Horn, and ends with the One who knows both halves of you.

A reflection

The day every signature stops

Dominion belongs to Allah every day. So why does the ayah tie it to one day in particular: the day the Horn is blown?

The classical answer is about rivals. In this world many people claim a share of power. Kings, owners, managers, parents, the loud and the rich. On that day no one disputes it, and no one even pretends. One commentary says that every tyrant who contested it in the world will concede it then. Another sets beside it a parallel ayah: 'and the command, that day, belongs to Allah' (82:19).

Think of what happens when a company goes into liquidation. The day before, directors sign cheques, approve hires and send confident emails. The morning the liquidator is appointed, every one of those signatures stops counting. Nobody's authority was taken away bit by bit. It simply lapsed, all at once, to the one person named on the order.

That is what the ego does not like to imagine. We hold small dominions: a team, a household, an audience, a reputation. Slowly we start to speak of them as ours in a final sense. This ayah is a quiet reminder that every one of those titles has an end date, and they all share it.

There is no arrogance in Allah saying so, and no need of our applause. Arrogance is claiming what is not yours. Stating what is yours is simply truth. The ayah calls His word exactly that: qawluhu al-ḥaqq, His word is the truth.

The humility it asks for is light, not crushing. Hold your small authority as a loan. Sign carefully, because every signature is temporary.
