Ya-Sin 36:15

“They said, "You are not but human beings like us, and the Most Merciful has not revealed a thing. You are only telling lies."”

Saheeh International

Essence

'You are only skin like us': the oldest reason for refusing a messenger is that he is ordinary, and it is still common.

A reflection

We would have believed, if he had not been familiar

A woman in her sixties is told by her nephew, now a cardiologist, that her blood pressure readings are dangerous. She laughs. This is the boy who used to raid her biscuit tin. She waits three months and asks her own doctor, a stranger. He says exactly the same thing, and she starts the tablets that week.

Most of us read this town's objection and feel faintly superior. 'You are only human like us.' How could anyone reject a messenger for that? Had we been there, we tell ourselves, we would have recognised the truth.

But look closely at what they actually said. Not that the message was false, but that the messengers were ordinary. The commentaries give their meaning: you have no distinction over us that would single you out for what you claim. They could see the messengers' faces, hear their accents, watch them eat. Nothing about them glowed.

That objection does not belong to a distant town. It is the most natural human response to truth delivered by someone we know. The colleague who points out the error. The younger sibling who has started to pray. The friend who says something we did not want to hear. We look at who is saying it before we hear what is said.

The Quran's messengers almost always came in that ordinary form. They were human, from among their people, speaking their language. That was not a flaw in the sending. It was its point.

So the real question this ayah asks is not whether you would have believed a messenger. It is how you treat a true word when it comes from an ordinary mouth. Most of us have already been tested on this, more than once, this year.
