An-Nisa 4:132
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ وَكِيلًا
“And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.[222]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Everything belongs to Allah, and He is enough as the One to whom every affair can be handed: He guards it all and never tires.
A reflection
The keeper who never tires
Wa-kafā bi-llāhi wakīlā: and Allah is enough as the One entrusted with every affair.
A leading early commentator unpacks the name. Everything in the heavens and the earth is His. He stands over all of it and guards all of it. Knowledge of nothing in it escapes Him. Guarding and managing it does not weary Him. An early authority gave wakīl a single word: guardian.
Now picture a woman who holds her whole family together. She manages her father's medication, her brother's debts, her sister's childcare, the family group's every crisis. She half believes that if she stopped, it would all fall apart. Then flu puts her in bed for nine days. Her phone stays off. And the world carries on. Her father takes his tablets. Her sister finds a neighbour. Nothing collapses.
She is shaken, and then oddly relieved. She was never the one holding it all.
This is where the ego shrinks. Many of us carry a secret belief that we are load-bearing walls. The ayah gently corrects it. There is one Guardian of everything, and He has never needed us to hold anything up. Whatever we hold, we hold on His behalf, for a while.
The correction is humbling. It is also a mercy. The person who thinks everything depends on them cannot rest. The person who knows Who truly keeps things can work hard and still sleep.
Does Allah need us to acknowledge Him as Guardian? He needs nothing; the ayah before this one has just called Him free of all need (4:131). The name is offered so we can put down what was never ours to carry alone.
