An-Nisa 4:163

“Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Descendants,[235] Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon; and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].”

Essence

The same Lord who spoke to Nuh, Ibrahim, Isa and Dawud revealed to the Prophet ﷺ: one Sender, one message, one long unbroken line.

A reflection

One 'We' across thousands of years

Innā awḥaynā ilayka ka-mā awḥaynā ilā Nūḥ: We revealed to you as We revealed to Nuh.

Read the ayah slowly and notice who never changes. The names change: Nuh, Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, Isa, Ayyub, Yunus, Harun, Sulayman, Dawud. The lands change, the languages change, the centuries pile up. The speaker does not. The same 'We' sends to the first and to the last.

The word for prophet carries its own picture. The root of nabiyy named a flood that came down from another country, from rain nobody there had seen. A prophet brings news from beyond his people's sight. Every name in this list was such a flood, and every one ran from the same source.

That is a quiet blow to a very modern vanity. We like to be the first. The first to think it, the first to say it, the generation that finally sees clearly. Picture a young poet at her first open-mic night. She introduces her piece as something nobody has ever said. Afterwards an old man shows her a line written eight hundred years ago saying the same thing, more simply. She is embarrassed, then strangely relieved. She is not alone in it after all.

The ayah does this even for the Prophet ﷺ, the noblest of creation. One commentary puts it plainly: you are not the first of the messengers. His greatness is not in being new. It is in being sent by the One who has always sent.

And why would Allah tell us all this about Himself? Not because He needs His record admired. He is free of need (35:15). He tells us for our sake. The ego loves to think it stands at the start of history. Here it can rest in a line far longer than itself.

Humility here is not shrinking. It is finding your place in something that was true before you arrived.
