An-Nisa 4:168

“Indeed, those who disbelieve and commit wrong [or injustice] - never will Allāh forgive them, nor will He guide them to a path,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Those who reject the truth and persist in wronging others, knowingly, until the end, close behind them the very doors of forgiveness and guidance.

A reflection

Not a verdict to throw at anyone

Lam yakuni llāhu li-yaghfira lahum: Allah is not one to forgive them.

The Arabic construction is strong. It does not simply say 'He will not forgive'. It says, in effect, that forgiving them is not something He would do. The weight is deliberate.

Which makes it all the more important to read who 'them' is. The commentators are careful here. One says plainly that this concerns whoever dies upon disbelief without repenting. Another explains that if the words are taken as general, they carry an unspoken condition: no repentance. A third says it refers to those whom Allah already knew would never believe. None of them reads it as a verdict on a living person who can still turn.

That matters, because ayat like this get misused. Picture a family group chat. Someone shares a news clip of a famous comedian mocking religion. Underneath, a cousin posts this ayah, captioned: 'No forgiveness for him, ever.' A few people react with approval. Nobody asks how the cousin knows how that man's life will end.

But nobody does know. The root of yaghfira pictures a covering that also protects, like the mail hood worn under a helmet to guard the neck. That covering is Allah's to give. The door to it stays open as long as a person breathes. The Quran says elsewhere: if they stop, what is past will be forgiven them (8:38).

So this ayah is not a stone for us to throw. It is a warning about where a road ends if it is walked to the end. Its proper reader is oneself: a reminder never to let rejection harden into a lifelong stance.

Next time you are tempted to announce that someone is beyond Allah's forgiveness, stop. You do not know their last chapter. Pray for it instead.
