An-Nisa · Madani · ayah 169 of 176
An-Nisa 4:169
إِلَّا طَرِيقَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا ۚ وَكَانَ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ يَسِيرًا
“Except the path of Hell; they will abide therein forever. And that, for Allāh, is [always] easy.”
Saheeh International
Essence
For those who refuse and obstruct to the end, only one road remains: Hell, for ever; and that is no strain on Allah.
A reflection
The opponent who was never even discussed
Wa-kāna dhālika ʿalā llāhi yasīrā: and that is easy for Allah.
The last word is light. The root of yasīr pictures a mare with light, easy steps, and a horse that is easy to lead. Ease is a thing opening up, with no resistance.
One classical commentator explains why it is easy. No one Allah wills this for can refuse it. No one can stop Him. Nothing He intends is hard for Him, because the creation is His and the command is His. Another commentator adds a sharper note: the phrase belittles those it describes. They imagined themselves great opponents. Allah is not troubled by them at all.
That is a blow to a particular kind of pride: the pride of the rebel who thinks his defiance is a grand drama.
Picture a mid-level manager who spends a year quietly plotting against his company. He collects grievances, briefs a journalist, imagines the boardroom in uproar. In his mind he is the company's great adversary. When it finally comes out, the board settles it in a ten-minute call. He later learns his name was barely mentioned. He had never been the centre of the story.
People who set themselves against Allah often feel like heroes in an epic. The ayah quietly removes the epic. There is no struggle on His side, no strain.
Is it harsh to say punishment is 'easy'? Remember the order of this passage. Allah sent messengers so that no one would be judged without warning (4:165). He loves to remove every excuse. 'Easy' does not mean eager. It means unstoppable. His justice cannot be dodged by the clever or the powerful.
The humble response is not to test that ease. It is to stop pretending we are the main character, and walk the other road.
