An-Nisa 4:49
“Have you not seen those who claim themselves to be pure? Rather, Allāh purifies whom He wills, and injustice is not done to them, [even] as much as a thread [inside a date seed].”
Saheeh International
Essence
Declaring yourself pure counts for nothing; Allah alone purifies and vouches for whom He wills, and no one is wronged by even a date-stone's thread.
A reflection
Only One can see what the testimony is about
A-lam tara: have you not seen? The ayah begins by inviting the Prophet ﷺ to look, and to wonder. Look at people who declare themselves pure. Then comes the answer, turning everything around: bali Allāhu yuzakkī man yashāʾ. No, it is Allah who purifies whom He wills.
Why should His verdict be the only one that counts? One classical theologian gives a precise reason. Purity before Allah rests on taqwā, mindfulness of Him. And taqwā is a quality of the inside, whose reality only Allah knows. So only He can certify it. Another classical commentator puts it simply: He alone knows who truly deserves the word.
That is majesty, and it is uncomfortable for the ego. The ego loves to write its own reference. It describes its motives generously and its failures briefly. It believes its own press release. The ayah reminds it that the only reference that will be read on the Day is the one written by the One who saw everything.
Is it arrogant for Allah to keep this right for Himself? He does not hoard praise. The ayah says He does purify and vouch for people, generously, whomever He wills. He is the Free of need (35:15), and He gains nothing by withholding a good word. He simply gives an accurate one.
One classical commentator notes the one time the Prophet ﷺ spoke of his own trustworthiness. It was when hypocrites accused him of unfairness, and Allah had already vouched for him. How different, he says, is the one Allah testifies for from the one who testifies for himself.
There is freedom in this. You do not have to keep arguing your own case before people. You cannot see your own heart fully anyway. Hand the verdict to the One who can, and get on with becoming what He loves.
