Fussilat 41:22

“And you were not covering [i.e., protecting] yourselves,[1389] lest your hearing testify against you or your sight or your skins, but you assumed that Allāh does not know much of what you do.”

Essence

They hid from people, never imagining their own ears, eyes and skin would speak, because they assumed Allah knew little of what they did.

A reflection

Overheard behind the curtains of the Kaʿba

This ayah has a known occasion, recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. A Companion was standing hidden behind the coverings of the Kaʿba. Three men came and stood near him. He described them as having much fat on their bellies and little understanding in their hearts.

They spoke, and one asked: do you think Allah hears what we are saying? Another said: He hears if we speak aloud, and He does not hear if we whisper. The third said: if He hears any of it, He hears all of it. The Companion mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and Allah revealed this ayah. You were not screening yourselves lest your hearing, your eyes and your skins testify against you. But you assumed that Allah does not know much of what you do.

There is a quiet irony in the scene. The man who was hidden behind a screen overheard men discussing whether they could hide from God. They thought a lowered voice was a curtain. They had no idea that a Companion stood a few feet away, and that Allah, far nearer, was about to answer them in revelation.

A sceptic might hear "Allah knows everything you do" as a ruler boasting of his spies. But notice what the ayah actually rebukes. Not people who were afraid. People who were careless, because they assumed a lowered voice could escape Him.

Picture three colleagues in a lift, lowering their voices to criticise the manager. The lift stops, the doors open, and he is standing there with a coffee. They go red. They had forgotten lifts have doors, and that walls are thinner than they think.

The ayah's correction is gentler and more serious than embarrassment. It is not that you might be overheard. It is that you are always heard. The ego likes to believe it keeps a few private rooms where its pride can do as it pleases. There are none. The third man had it right. If He hears any of it, He hears all of it.
