Ghafir 40:41

۞ وَيَـٰقَوْمِ مَا لِىٓ أَدْعُوكُمْ إِلَى ٱلنَّجَوٰةِ وَتَدْعُونَنِىٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ

“And O my people, how is it that I invite you to salvation while you invite me to the Fire?”

Saheeh International

Essence

One man calls a nation to the high ground above the flood, while the nation calls him down into the Fire.

A reflection

Nobody says come to the Fire

We tend to imagine that those who call people to the Fire are easy to spot. Villains, tempters, people with an obvious agenda. Surely nobody actually says: come to the Fire.

They did not say it here either. The believer is describing what their invitation amounted to, not what it sounded like.

One early commentary explains: you call me to the deeds of the people of the Fire. And it preserves an early explanation of what that call actually was. They were calling him to their religion, and to stay with them.

To stay with them. That is how the call to the Fire usually sounds. Not a threat, but an embrace. Come back. Be one of us again. Do not make things awkward. Remember who your family is.

The believer was one of Pharaoh's own family. His people did not want him destroyed. They wanted him back. Their call was warm, familiar and comfortable. That is exactly what made it dangerous.

At a school reunion, a young man who has started praying is surrounded by old friends. You used to be fun, they say, laughing. Come back to us. Nobody is cruel. Nobody mentions the Fire.

The ayah teaches us to listen beneath the words. Where does this invitation lead, if I follow it all the way? An invitation can be kind in tone and still lead downhill.

It also asks us to check our own invitations. When we call a friend away from a prayer, a fast or an honest choice, we may be speaking warmly. But what are we calling them to?
