Ghafir 40:48

“Those who had been arrogant will say, "Indeed, all [of us] are in it. Indeed, Allāh has judged between the servants."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The arrogant, asked to carry their followers' share, can only admit that they are all in the Fire and that Allah has already judged.

A reflection

The proud finally say His name

Listen to who is speaking. Qāla alladhīna istakbarū: those who had been arrogant said.

The root k-b-r is about size. Something too big to fit, the lexicons say. In Allah, greatness that is simply true. In a human being, a self swollen past its real size. Istakbarū is the form for seeking greatness, claiming it. One commentary specifies what they were too big for: submitting to the prophets.

These were the people who would not bow. They decided what was true for others. They led, and others walked behind them.

Now hear their last recorded words in this exchange. Allah has judged between the servants. Three things have happened in one short sentence. They say His name. They admit His judgement is done. And they place themselves among al-ʿibād, the servants, the same word for everyone.

The ego that once filled a palace now fits in a single word, and it is the same word as the follower's. No title survives. No rank. Not even the dignity of being judged separately.

A managing director insisted for twenty years that every employee call him sir. At the public inquiry into his company's collapse, the chair reads out the witness list. He is called by his first name and surname, like the cleaner before him.

There is a doubt worth facing honestly. Does Allah need the proud to admit it? Is this a God who demands acknowledgement? The ayah answers itself. The admission changes nothing, earns nothing and is given to no audience. Allah gains nothing from it. Their pride never added to His kingdom, and their confession now takes nothing from their loss.

The only one who could have benefited from saying these words was the speaker, and only while there was still time. Pride is not taken from us to feed Allah's greatness. It is taken because it was a lie about our own size.
