Ghafir 40:56
“Indeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without [any] evidence having come to them - there is not within their breasts except pride, [the extent of] which they cannot reach. So seek refuge in Allāh. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Seeing.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Behind arguments against Allah's signs made without proof lies a pride that never reaches its goal; the answer is refuge in the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
A reflection
He hears what they say, and sees what they do
Innahu huwa al-samīʿu al-baṣīr. Truly He, He alone, is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
The concise commentaries explain why these two names close this ayah. He hears their words. He sees their conduct. Nothing of either escapes Him, and He will repay it.
A classical spiritual commentary notices something precise. When the Quran tells us to seek refuge from Satan, it often closes with the Hearing, the Knowing (41:36). Here, it closes with the Hearing, the Seeing. Why the difference? Because here, it says, what we seek refuge from is the speech of the arguers and their actions, which are seen openly. Satan sees us from where we cannot see him, so there the Quran speaks of knowledge. The names fit the danger exactly.
That precision is itself a sign of majesty. Every word placed with care, every name chosen for the moment.
It also puts the arguers in their place. They wanted, above all, to be heard: to win the room, dominate the debate, be above everyone. The ayah says there is only One who truly hears. Their loudest speech is a small sound in His hearing. The ego that wanted the last word finds that the last word belongs to Another.
A man on a long video call talks over everyone for forty minutes. He assumes the meeting is his. Afterwards he discovers the call was recorded, and the recording is sent to the whole company. Every interruption is there.
Some may feel uneasy at a God who hears and sees everything. Is this surveillance? The ayah frames it the opposite way. One classical commentary reads it as protection: He hears what you say and what they say. He sees what you do and what they do. So He is your helper against them. For the one seeking refuge, the All-Seeing is not a camera. He is a guardian who misses nothing.
